The beginning of the 2021 growing season came early, with extended periods of sunny weather and periods of late, but much-needed, rain. The season was considered early, as a drought year, with the start being low on humidity, with high heat, and high winds, occurring as early as the beginning of May. The summer however returned to more seasonal, expected temperatures, and even ripening led to one of the earliest harvest beginnings. Lower yields also contributed to the early start and showed intense fruit flavor development. Once harvest began, we saw clear skies through all of September and well into October before we received some early rain. Chardonnay had one of the lowest yields on record, leading to exceptional quality in the winery, with deep layers of bright fruit flavors. Grapes for this 2021 Private Reserve were picked between September 27 and October 3, 2021.

TASTING NOTES:
Full-bodied, bright, and vibrant, this toasty white is a classic example of the beauty and expression of a classic Napa Valley Chardonnay. The aroma is fragrant and inviting with white flowers, honeycomb, and citrus blossom, alongside hints of caramel apple and buttered brioche. The palate shows a creamy, layered texture with lemon meringue, apricot, peach cobbler, and grilled mango. The oak is well-integrated and nuanced demonstrating notes of vanilla crème brûlée and ginger spice, which finishes long and savory, with mouth-watering acidity, lovely freshness, and crisp minerality.

Gamble Ranch is Beringer’s northernmost Chardonnay vineyard, the source for Private Reserve for decades, located near the town of Yountville, in the Oakville AVA, where daytime temperatures slowly climb as the cooling morning fog recedes south to San Pablo Bay. This significant diurnal shift allows the grapes to maintain their acidity, which is essential to balancing the ripe, rich flavors as they develop during warm afternoons. Older vines, planted in 1976, featuring the Wente Clone 4, are predominant.
